Adventure Tourism: Which is your Adventurous Personality?

The horoscope, the zodiac, the tea leaves … since immemorial times people have tried to understand human attributes and the reasons why we behave the way we do. At the corporate level as well, companies pay large sums of money to venture into these murky waters and train their employees to understand the personality types of each and use that to increase their labor productivity.

One of such schemes is the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), which suggests the possibility of identifying 16 personality types according to different human characteristics. From these personality types, the psychologist David Keirseyidentified four general temperaments in which these personalities divide: the Rational, the Idealist, the Artisan and the Guardian. Which is your Adventurous Personality?

Outside the workplace, leaving aside the desks, filing cabinets and cups of coffee, types of temperament and personality can also be applied to identify the type of adventurer each of us is and how this reflects on our world tours. The following is a summary of the four temperaments or adventurouspersonalities.

The Rational: Adventure is the result of poor planning

I recently had the idea of taking a comprehensive bicycle tour along the Atlantic and Mediterranean coast of Portugal, where I was going on vacations. I decided to talk with a friend of those who pay close attention to details, and show her the itinerary of my long journey. My friend, a doctor working in the emergency room and who devotes her spare time to adventure racing, then took the maps and set out to mark the potential weaknesses of my plan.

The rational has a logical approach to decision making, leaving no room for anything that is not meaningful. The plan will either function or not function. If it will not, do not expect the Rational to accept being part of the illusion, unless you can provide data proving otherwise. When this happens, however, can you catch them unprepared and will need to deal with that as well.

For the Rational, problem solving must take place when things are not planned properly. To contrast, the Rationals are always meticulous thinkers who will offer a Plan C, D and E … just in case! These are the best people to have to co-pilot, as they have instinctive mapping skills.

This group may be the most misunderstood, because their motivations defy those leading the rest of the population. This type of adventurers long to be part of the group, but do not externalize any quantifiable motivation expressed in money, producedgoods, etc. The greatest strength of the Idealist is its ability to be inclusive, protecting the democratic input. Thus, the Idealist usually is best in roles in which he or she is required to lead groups to surpass the frictions when they occur.

The Idealists are passionate about their goals, and tirelessly devoted to the ideas of others, besides keeping usually a positive mood. If an Idealist is part of your team, you will be on the right track by allowing ample opportunity to weigh and minimize the importance of criticism, since they can take it personally. Note that you may need to delegate work and strategic logistics to other group members, or have other members cooperate with the Idealist to strengthen his / her performance in these areas.

You do not identify yourself with any of these adventurer’sprofiles? In our next blog entry we will offer you a synthesis of the other two adventurous personalities: the Artisan and the Guardian.
