But don’t put your dance shoes and party spirit away just yet as another fabulous celebration will begin less than eight weeks into 2013 and to be a part of it, you need to start planning now if you want to get to Brazil in time. Carnival will soon be upon us and this is the party and parade that simply cannot be out-done by another other! Make 2013 the year you find yourself enjoying everything that Rio de Janeiro has to offer and what better time than during Carnival!

>> Book your Tickets for Carnival in Rio

Carnival – A Celebration before Easter

Forty days before Easter, Brazilians right across the country engage in celebrations big and small, but the most vibrant and colorful of all, and no doubt the most famous one the world has ever known is the Carnival held in Rio. This annual four-day event is a wild party that has everyone singing and dancing and just over-indulging in everything that is pleasing. It is a festival that is meant to celebrate the luxuries of life in the few days before Lent, when abstaining from such luxuries is the sacrifice or penitence that a believer observes in preparation for Easter – giving up comforts and pleasures for forty days.

Carnival 2013 begins on Saturday February 9th and ends on “fat Tuesday”, which is so named because that is the last day that individuals would engage in the practice of eating richer and fattier foods before Lent begins on Ash Wednesday. “Fat Tuesday” or “mardi Gras” is the celebration that is most famously attributed to New Orleans, where similar to Rio, people engage in a wild party in the streets with song and dance and parades. Another name for this day is Shrove Tuesday.

Carnival in Rio is a big production, with people preparing for it months in advance. It is not just a parade of people running rampant in the streets having fun. Along with the street festivals that you can participate in, there are planned events that are meaningful and very well representative of the Brazilian culture.

The Samba Parade, Costumes and the Sambodromo

The Samba Parade is the highlight of the Rio Carnival and it involves people in various neighborhoods coming together to form a highly detailed and organized group that will compete against one another through displays of costumes, dances, floats, and songs as coordinated by a designer. Each samba school presents a theme and everything displayed is judged overall. This highly competitive event is held in the grand venue called the Sambodromo (Sambadrome as it is known in English), in which visitors can purchase tickets to, to witness the outstanding parade, while many others can catch the broadcast of it on TV.

Costumes and floats are detailed and elaborate, not to mention vivacious, animated and colorful. The parade is immensely entertaining for all, both locals and visitors alike. In fact it is Carnival that attracts the largest number of tourists each year to Rio.

There are a multitude of Carnival balls that you can purchase tickets to attend but there are many free events that you can join in on like the numerous street parties. There are street bands to entertain and even street rehearsals that you might catch. During Carnival, there is nothing that will go unnoticed because everything that is going on is extravagant!

For many it was their first time in this huge carnival; others were repeating the experience of a previous year and yet many others are regular attendees of this party. Everyone enjoyed Carnival in Rio as never before, and they are currently already looking forward to the 2013 Edition.

Officially, the Carnival of Rio de Janeiro ended on Tuesday, February 21st. Attendees, however, did not want the party ended and everyone enjoyed his or her own way, participating in parties and festivities making an Endless Carnival of Rio. It is estimated that a total of five million people enjoyed the carnival parades.

During the days of this festival, a total of 424 groups paraded in different parts of the city. With this figure in mind, the Carnival of the streets of Rio de Janeiro is without a doubt, the largest in all of Brazil.

The traditional parade of Cordão do Bola Preta was the one who broke all records: more than two million people gathered on Saturday, 18 February to follow this powerful electric trio along the Avenida Rio Branco. In the financial center of the city, also, Monobloco dragged with it some 500,000 attendees who followed them to the point of losing their breath on the last day of Carnival. Even ahead of the start of Rio’s Carnival, on Sunday 12 February the Bloco da Preta paraded and was followed by some 250,000 people.

On the coast, the scene was repeated. The Ipanema Beach was also the scene of the carnival blocos which dragged crowds at this party that never ends. The Carnival bloco Simpatia É Quase Amor led a movement of about 150,000 people along Avenida Vieira Souto during Sunday, February 19.

On Monday, 20 February a total of 400,000 people gathered once again on this avenue to enjoy a mix of rhythms by AfroReggae. That was the most surprising parade, given that the original expectation was to bring together many people indeed, but in a number nearer to half of those who finally attended.

On Sunday, at Praça XV, 40,000 people marched in the very traditional Cordão do Boitatá. Also that day, the gardens of Aterro do Flamengo, designed by landscape architect Burle Marx, seemed to disappear when they were crossed by the Bangalafumenga group followed by a crowd of some 60.000 attendees who enjoyed the rhythms of Carnival.

On February 21 the biggest party of the Beatles that has taken place in the world was held in Rio de Janeiro. With 120 drummers, the group Sargento Pimenta led another 60,000 people over the Aterro do Flamengo gardens, dancing to the sound of rhythms that were a mixture of the biggest hits of the famous band from Liverpool with the drumming of samba, afoxé and other rhythms.

These impressive figures of attendance to the Rio de Janeiro’s Carnival would not have been possible without the work of several institutions involved, such as the Municipal Guard, Comlurb, CET-Rio, the Ministry of Public Order, the Firefighters, the Military Police and the coordination of lthe ocal tourist office: Riotur. For the 2012 edition of Carnival in Rio, a total of 8,400 portable chemical toilets and 50 containers were installed to prevent hygiene problems. Substantial monitoring was conducted, which resulted in 1,014 arrests of people were found urinating in public. 623 emergency services were provided from January 28 until Tuesday 21 February, the last day of carnival. Garbage collection totaled one thousand tons, which is 300 tons less than in the 2011 edition.

Planning for the 2013 edition of the Carnival of Rio has already started, as it is a party that never ends. Start planning your trip to Rio de Janeiro for the Carnival 2013 right now. Do not miss out on this opportunity to attend a great party, probably one of the greatest parties in the whole world!

The event is scheduled for 23 to 28 July, 2013 and more than two million young people are expected to attend, mainly motivated by the presence of Pope Benedict XVI.

The World Youth Day is organized since 1984 and has already held editions in cities such as Buenos Aires, Rome and Toronto. This event mobilizes millions of youth around the world who make their pilgrimage to commune with the church and meet the Pope. The programming of WYD also provides activities such as catechesis, masses, adorations, lectures, prayers and music shows.

This is an experience that strengthens the bonds of faith, hope and friendship among young people. The event is also a benefit to society in general, for the host city for the day in question and for the whole country. This is positive for Rio de Janeiro and for all of Brazil, considering that the report released by the organizers of WYD in Madrid, which took place in 2011, shows an economic impact of about 354 million Euros for all of Spain. The study, conducted by the firm Pricewaterhouse Coopers (PwC) believes that the costs incurred by foreigners in Madrid for this occasion amounted to 147 million Euros.

The 2011 edition in Madrid brought together about one and a half million young people, according to data from the archbishop of Madrid. 189 countries were represented and nearly five thousand journalists were granted credentials for the event. The cost of organizational expenses amounted to EUR 50 million, which were derived from resources generated by the organization.

According to the report of the Archbishop, the experience was considered very positive by more than 90% of the participants. In addition to the economic benefits, and other previously mentioned positive aspects, the WYD strengthened the country’s image, since about 90% of foreign visitors attending the WYD expressed willingness to return to Spain in the future.

With the visit of Benedict XVI and many young people meeting in Rio de Janeiro, we can expect a similar success for 2013. Do not miss it!
