Travel APP Review: Momondo Places

Travel site momondo.co.uk, a one-stop comparison site for flights, hotels, car and holiday rentals, has recently launched a new app for iPad (the mobile version is set to arrive soon), called momondo places. It’s a city guide, available for free from the iOS store, but with a difference – users can tailor the tips that appear depending on their mood.

Things We Love

  • The styling of the app is beautiful – the colour wheel is a quirky yet lovely way to tailor each guide according to mood, while the guides themselves have the look and feel of a traditional book, so that users can quite literally “flip” through them. It’s easy to use, responsive and fast, too.

  • The colour wheel with six different moods isn’t something that we’ve seen before and it’s a really nice way to tailor each city guide according to your travel style. If you’re looking to woo a loved one, pick the “romantic” mood and the guide will show you hidden gems, restaurants, shops and boutiques that are the perfect setting for romance. Travelling with children? Select the “family” mood for fun, family-friendly adventures. Love galleries, museums and architecture? Select the “culture” mood. There’s also a “fancy” mood for luxury travel, a “social” mood if you want to meet new people and a “local” mood for authentic experiences. You can also sort the tips by neighbourhood, or simply view all of the tips for each city.

  • The app is completely free, which is a huge plus point. Download the app and the city guides that you want to explore – once downloaded, the maps and data will be available offline so you don’t have to fork out for hefty roaming charges.

  • Momondo’s travel team have put together over 200 tips and have uncovered the hidden gems, restaurants, cultural hotspots, markets, family-friendly days out and much, much more for 7 cities across the world. Each snippet of info is bite-sized, which makes it easy to digest as you don’t get bogged down in information. They’re also accompanied by full colour photos, too.

The current city guides available are:

  • London, England
  • Barcelona, Spain
  • Berlin, Germany
  • Copenhagan, Denmark
  • New York, United States
  • Paris, France
  • Rome, Italy

Although we love the app, and think that the current selection of city guides is good (momondo are adding Lisbon, Amsterdam and Moscow soon), we hope that they add more in future. We’re also glad that a mobile version of the app is currently in development, but it would be good if similar apps were developed for Android and Kindle devices so that a wider range of users can benefit from it.

All in all, it’s an excellent app – and a brilliant addition to any traveller’s pocket.
