Sri Lanka, How to get there

Sri Lanka is an island in the Indian Ocean, located southeast from India. It is for this reason that you will need to book a flight to Sri Lanka as the only way to get there from far distances. If you are traveling from India, ferry services to Sri Lanka are sometimes offered.

Sri LankaYou should first of all check if you need a visa to enter the country. Most western European countries, as well as Australia, New Zealand and the US are entitled a tourist visa upon entry, which lasts 30 days and does not have any requirements other than a valid passport for the entire period of your staying. If willing to spend more time when you travel to Sri Lanka, you will need to go to the Department of Immigration in Colombo upon arrival and apply for an extension.

Your passport should be valid at least for all the time you plan to stay in Sri Lanka. You are required to carry it with you at all times in the country, since there are checkpoints in different parts of the roads where you are required to show it. You also need your passport to exchange money and to buy your ticket in many touristic destinations.

Sri Lanka has a single international Airport called Bandaranaike. The airport code is CMB. Bandaranaike International Airport is 30 kilometers north from Colombo, the capital city, in a place called Katunayake.

Bandaranaike is served by several airlines. From Western Europe, seasonal flights are offered from Amsterdam (Arkefly), Frankfurt (Condor Flugdienst), Brussels (JetairFly) and Stockholm (Novair). Meridiana Fly offers regular flights to Milan, while SriLankan Airlines offer flights from Frankfurt, London, Milan, Paris and Rome.

Other airlines that offer flights to Sri Lanka through connections in Asia or the Middle East are Air Arabia, AirAsia, Air India Express, Cathay Pacific, Emirates, Etihad Airways, Flydubai, Gulf Air, Jet Airways, Kingfisher Airlines, Kuwait Airways, Malaysia Airlines, Mihin Lanka, Oman Air, Pakistan International Airlines, Qatar Airways, Royal Jordanian, Saudi Arabian Airlines, Singapore Airlines, Spicejet, Thai Airways International, Ukraine International Airlines and, of course, SriLankan Airlines once again.

You are better off checking with a travel agency before booking, since they can offer you package deals with accommodation or transport, according to your preferences. If you are thinking of a destination for your next holidays, Sri Lanka is worth considering. Have a good trip!
