2011 is the year Uruguay chose to celebrate its Bicentenary. Even when Uruguayan independence was only achieved in 1825, it was the 28th of February of 1811 that the independence process started with what is known as “Grito de Asencio”.
Gathered on the riverside of the Asencio River, the “criollos” –Spanish descendants born in America- decided to start the first revolutionary actions against the royalty of Spain, which had the sovereignty of the Uruguayan territory.
In October, continuing the celebration of the Bicentenary of the Process of Eastern Emancipation, the events will arrive in the Uruguayan capital of Montevideo. If you are doing tourism in Uruguay at this time, or if you are in Argentina and will join the locals on spending the long weekend in Uruguay, make sure you will go to Montevideo on the national holiday of this Monday, October 10th.
The 10th is actually used for celebrating the arrival of Columbus in America, which took place on October 12th, 1492. This day is a holiday in many countries, including Uruguay and Argentina. Moreover, on October 10th, 1811, Artigas was chosen as the Chief of the “Orientales” (as those fighting for Uruguayan Independence liked to call themselves).
For this special occasion, and after celebrating in the Uruguayan cities of Mercedes and Las Piedras, the Montevideo celebrations will take place with four simultaneous sceneries in which different national and international artists will be performing. Among those special performances are the one of the popular band “Rumbo” –after 25 years of absence-, and the shows of Bajofondo, El Cuarteto de Nos, Jaime Roos, Jorge Drexler, La Vela Puerca and some others.
Among the international artists which will be performing a special presentation will be that of the Catalan group “La FuradelsBaus”; a show which promises to be a great experience not to be missed. In its first presentation in Uruguay, the group will offer a mega-show with three great elements: an 8-meter high doll, a projecting ball containing 30 people and an articulated network of 40 people. Moreover, a great show from Gilberto Gil was also confirmed for this date.
The four stages in downtown Montevideo will function simultaneously, offering options for all tastes and age groups. This is a great excuse for all Uruguayans, as well as those doing tourism in Uruguay, to attend a special event full of Uruguayan spirit.
Among the performing artists you will find: La Tabaré, Las Pelotas (Argentina), La Vela Puerca, Cuarteto de Nos, Gilberto Gil (Brasil), El Choque Urbano (Argentina), Jaime Roos, Fata&Cia, Los Tres (Chile), Jorge Drexler, Rumbo, Bajofondo, Tonolec (Argentina), El Mató a un Policía Motorizado (Arg.), Alejandro Balbis, Dani Umpi, Hablan por la Espalda, Alberto Wolf & Los Terapeutas, Daniel Viglietti and Malena Muyala, Tronar de Tambores and Elumbe.
The event will finish with a Fireworks display, which will be shot from 3 different points in the city center. During the 10 minutes this show will last, you will be amazed by simultaneous fireworks.
If you are not in Montevideo, or prefer not to mingle with the crowds, you can also follow the shows live in the national broadcasting services. There will also be a special broadcast lasting 3 hours and showing the different events and projects which have taken place in Uruguay during the first six months of bicentenary celebrations.
What follows is the list of the four stages, each with the detail of the performing bands and the times of start and end of each performance. We hope you’ll have a great time doing tourism in Uruguay!
