If you’re thinking about traveling to Canada for the first time in the near future, there are a few things you should know before you cross over the border. Even if you feel like Canada is very similar to your country of origin, there are likely a few things that you should be aware of in order to have a safe, successful, and enjoyable trip.

To help you learn just what these things are, here are three things to know before traveling to Canada

Everything Will Have Tax Added

While you might be used to having tax added when buying something at home, you might not be prepared for how much tax you may be paying when you purchase something in Canada.

In addition to the federal sales tax that is added to anything that you purchase in Canada, there is also an additional tax from whatever province you’re visiting. Sometimes, this can all come together to add about 15 percent to the final total of whatever it is you’re buying. So if you’re trying to keep to a budget or only have a certain amount of money to spend on something, make sure you keep in mind that you’ll also have to be paying tax on top of the advertised price.

You’ll Want Trusted Health Insurance Coverage

Even though those living in Canada have their health insurance covered by the government, this doesn’t apply to those visiting the country. So if you’re going to be going to Canada and want to ensure that you’ll be able to get medical care if necessary, you may want to look into your current coverage and what it offers or get travel insurance that includes health insurance that is good to use in Canada.

If you do need medical attention when in Canada, there’s a good chance that you’ll have to pay in full before the treatment is completed if you don’t have insurance coverage. So to save on those costs, getting adequate health insurance that qualifies there may be something you want.

Determine If You’ll Need An International Driving Permit

Depending on what country you’re coming from, you may need to get an International Driving Permit if you plan on renting a car or driving yourself around in Canada.

If you have a valid driver’s license from the United States, that will be fine for driving on the streets of Canada. But if you’re coming from a different country, you’ll want to double check on what you need in order to safely drive there. Also, make sure you have adequate car insurance coverage for Canada as well.

If you’re going to be traveling to Canada soon, consider using the tips mentioned above to help you prepare for your trip.
